Since the appearance of Joe Sacco’s “Palestine” in 1996, the comic book as a form of documentary has undergone a renaissance. At the Lucerne School of Art and Design, the term “visual essay” refers to a combination of illustration reflecting a personal creative vision and journalism, and is a standard part of the curriculum. The result are visual essays about encounters on the dissecting table, in the animal cemetery, with an author of crossword puzzles, a brothel owner, a cat undertaker, and more. The book is a collection of 23 visual essays by students of the Lucerne School of Art and Design, with reflections and conversations on the visual essay. A publication of the Cartoonmuseum Basel in cooperation with the illustration programme of the Lucerne School of Art and Design. Contributions by Pierre Thomé, Yves Nussbaum (Noyau), Beat Schläpfer and Anette Gehrig; includes an interview with Joe Sacco and insertions by Marshall Arisman, Alexander Roob, Pit Wuhrer and Sharad Sharma.
