«Die Abenteuer der Ligne claire Der Fall Herr G. & Co.» Exhibition catalogue

Publications

With his world-famous adventure series “Tintin”, the Belgian illustrator Hergé created a milestone in the history of the comic book, at the same time forging and perfecting the style referred to as “Ligne claire”. In an exhibition titled “The Adventures of the Ligne claire. The Herr G. & Co. Affair”, the Cartoonmuseum Basel displayed original works by the main representatives of this popular and challenging style. The show covered a period extending from the early days, to the style’s peak in the mid-20th century, right through to the present with works by contemporary Swiss artists. This brochure accompanied the exhibition of the same name at the Cartoonmuseum Basel. It explores the fascinating history of the Ligne claire style in an essay by Ariel Herbex, several illustrations by Katsushika Hokusai, George McManus, Hergé, Joost Swarte and many others, as well as Anette Gehrig’s exclusive interview with comic artist and designer Joost Swarte. With an introduction by Anette Gehrig.
